Taking progetto semiserio’s artistic interest in social phenomena and in the individual in the context of his or her political and social environment as our motivation, we posit that Mexico is currently undergoing one of the most incredible social transformation processes in the history of the country.

Therefore Columbian author Juan Tafur an Argentine composer Diego Collatti developed a contemporary music theater play to label this phenomenon not just as a Mexican or a Latin American one, but by looking on individuals’ moral, ethics and duty, to question, if ones decisions and corruptability is the core of such social developments. For this, it’s a global phenomenon.

Die Ballade von El Muerto continues the long-standing Mexican tradition of popular songs called corridos. Today, they concentrate on other kinds of heroes – or, rather, “fake heroes”: the bosses and contract killers of drug cartels. Following the story of El Muerto (“The Dead Man”), a contract killer and drug trafficker, who is now put into a dark prison cell for questioning, the play delves into a world of violence.

Die Ballade von El Muerto is a production by progetto semiserio in coproduction with Hundsturm/Volkstheater Wien and into the city/Wiener Festwochen, and will have its world premiere on June 6th, 2013 in Vienna.
