Georg Steker

Creative Direction, Co-Founder

progetto semiserio georg steker

Georg Steker was born in 1973 in Vienna and received his first artistic education in the Vienna Boys’ Choir. After getting a degree in economic history in 2001, he devoted himself to the arts.

After years of studying voice at both music universities in Vienna, Steker’s interests concentrated on planning and putting various cultural and artistic projects into practice. He therefore completed a postgraduate cultural management course at the University of Vienna in 2005.

Organizing and curating concerts and musical theater projects resulted in the formation of the company progetto semiserio in 2001, for which Steker still works as an artistic director and manager together with Andreas Leisner, the director and current vice artistic director of the Tyrolean Festival Erl.

progetto semiserio’s artistic focus has developed toward creating genuinely new musical plays that are regularly and permanently supported by the City of Vienna and the Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture.

Artistically, progetto semiserio has been working in permanently changing creative teams that assemble for specific projects under the sole direction of Georg Steker since 2009.

His personal artistic productivity is reflected in the conceptualization, development, writing, and dramaturgic work of the musical theater pieces.

Steker’s work materializes first and foremost in progetto semiserio, but also in other theater and musical theater projects (Wiener Festwochen, Festival Ankunft: Neue Musik/D).

Furthermore, Georg Steker works as an executive producer for several international music and theater institutions in Austria (Schauspielhaus Wien, Linz09 – Cultural Capital of Europe, Wiener Festwochen, Österreichischer Komponistenbund, sirene Operntheater, etc.).

Starting in 2014, Georg Steker will be the director of the international festival Musiktheatertage Wien. He will share the position with Thomas Desi.
